SANGHAYA 2025: A Canvas of Heritage
Written by: Cesca Suarez
For centuries, dance has always been a medium of purpose and expression in the Philippines. It has been able to transcend boundaries beyond language and words. It is a symbol of our long-lasting culture. This year, the Center for Dance (CFD) painted a canvas of heritage with their annual talent fest — Sanghaya: Diwa Sa Bawat Indak, held last February 8, 2025 at the Bishop Frederick Rooker Auditorium (BFR).
SANGHAYA revolved around the theme of Filipino art, ones that symbolize the culture and livelihood of our ancestors. Each performance was crafted in portrayal of traditional Filipino paintings. Throughout the event, we were brought along a journey through the past and present.
Starting off the pre-show with a piece that truly never gets old, Terpsichore Jazz performs their winning piece in the International Youth Dance Competition (IYDC) in Bangkok, Thailand, “I Have Nothing,” depicting a sense of agony and yearning. Delving into the literary aspect of Filipino art — Ieka Rigor, Ieja Rigor, and Ms. Evangeline Faelnar performed a “Balagtasan” or a Filipino debate delivered in the form of a speech. Concluding the pre-show, Terpsichore Street performed the piece that won them the first place at the Revolution International Dance Championship in Melbourne, Australia, exuding charisma and passion with every move.
The event enthusiastically began with an opening dance parade as every class performed a dance segment onstage. It was shortly followed by the following performances:
- Could You Be Messiah by Terpsichore Jazz (taught by Ms. Ma Cecila Martinez, Mrs. Ma. Felicia Chingcuangco, Mrs. Ma. Cristina Limjap)
- Sino Ang Baliw by DS11 (taught by Coach Rosario Leticia Garcia)
- Limang Dipa/Nais Ko by DS 12 (taught by Coach Rosario Leticia Garcia)
- Sabel by Terpsichore Street (taught by Coach Emerson ‘Chow’ Marte)
- Mapa by DS9 and DS10 (taught by Coach Sheila May Pagaduan)
- Anak by Terpsichore Jazz
- Batang-bata/Awit ng Kabataan by DS7 and DS8 (taught by Coach Annabelle Ebol)
- Taas Noo by Terpsichore Street
- Tiktok Medley by all DS classes and varsity teams
- Seniors Tribute: Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko by CFD Seniors 2025
The event ended with a curtain call, where every class, varsity, teacher, and the event’s heads were called onstage — earning a loud applause from the audience for their passion and dedication.
Each and every performance was laced with aspects of Filipino culture. With themes of traditional transportation, family customs, and social justice, the performances were incredible depictions of heritage and diversity of it all. From the rhythm and music to the costumes worn by the performers, the use of Filipino elements were evidently seen.
It’s admirable to see how performers portray the diversity of Filipino culture in their own creative ways. Some performances were upbeat and lively, while some evoked a sense of agony and intensity — showing a range of emotions through their united heart for dance. Through the lens of an audience, you can truly feel the love and passion performers hone into their craft. Every emotion poured into the rhythm of movement somehow creates a sense of connection between the performers and audience. Dance is more than just mere movement; it is an echo of one’s spirit and soul.
SANGHAYA 2025: Diwa sa Bawat Indak showed us the beauty of our culture in such a way that transcends words. It pays a profound homage to Filipino art and its lasting impact today. Despite the distinct genres of dance and music integrated in the performances, they all share one goal: to tell the countless stories of our history. Whether it be customs from the past or traditions we practice up to this day, it proves that culture is truly timeless — that is shown through diversity of dance as a medium of expression. As the title says, the spirit of Filipino identity stays aflame through the boundless creativity of dance — painting a canvas of our priceless heritage.
